A Great Scene
There is nothing special about this shot in terms of technique, but I just love it.
It’s a street near Brooklyn, New York. I used the picture as a mid-essay break in a story I published a few months back on WINS radio news reporter Al Jones. I took it while leaning out the window of the WINS news car as we drove to the the scene of a shooting.
It was taken just as the sun was going down. Night time was setting in. The neon sign on the grocery store, the mural, the graffiti, the litter, the fire escape, the pedestrians ignoring it all - just says “New York” to me. While working on the essay I found myself drawn to this image over and over. I couldn’t look away from it every time I scrolled by. Not sure why.
