Kamala Harris

During the summer and fall of 2019, and January of 2020, I made several trips to New Hampshire to cover the presidential primary in that state. A number of top Democrats were seeking their party’s nomination and several of them will remain on the national political stage for years to come.

These essays are posted here as they were written at the time, with the exception of the lead essay on Kamala Harris, which was adjusted only slightly, to update her selection as Joe Biden’s running mate.

Bernie Sanders

Some Sanders supporters urged President-elect Joe Biden to select the Vermont senator for a spot in the administration. There was also speculation, following the 2020 general election, that Washington state Governor Jay Inslee might be considered as an EPA or Energy secretary in a Biden administration.

Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld(R) ran on principle to challenge President Trump for the Republican nomination. Though Maryland Governor Larry Hogan(R) tested the waters for a challenge to Trump, in the end, he declined. Hogan is considered a possible Republican candidate in 2024.
