South of Hobbs, East of El Paso

Headed south out of New Mexico, toward El Paso, you are likely to come across the Salt Flat Cafe.

It’s closed now, but it was in business for years as one of the only places on this desolate stretch of highway where you could get a hand-pressed, homemade hamburger and coke. You could also make a phone call from outside or catch the next Greyhound bus in either direction.
