Starting Again

A few months before the pandemic changed our lives I quit my regular job to start up a photography business. It wasn’t going to be just any photography business, but one that would focus on story-telling and collaboration with clients who require a constant supply of content for their own social media channels, websites, and other publications.

I did not see the pandemic coming and I could not have predicted how it would - at least initially - lead many of my potential collaborators to reduce spending on things like photography. My new business went dormant for a few months and then was pushed to the side further when I began teaching at the University of New Haven in Connecticut.

Now it’s 2023 and though I never fully quit I am ready to start again. I have not put down the camera in the last three years. I have been busy nearly every month pursuing my own projects with people and places I find interesting.

A little about me in case we haven’t met…

I began my career as a news reporter and then transitioned to the field of public relations. I have worked in government, politics, and on behalf of private sector clients who required communications advice and guidance. Especially in times of crisis. About ten years ago, after completing a job in the U.S. Senate, I decided to follow a dream of mine that I had deferred since the fifth grade when I declared myself to be a photographer.

Before leaving Washington and moving back to Connecticut I pursued a formal education in the field of photography first through a program offered by Boston University and later obtaining a Master’s in photojournalism from the Corcoran School of Art and Design - which at the time was affiliated with the Corcoran Museum.

There are many working photographers who consider themselves self-taught. They picked up a camera one day, fell in love, and just delved deeply into the subject until they became experts in their own right or developed their own unique style, perhaps aided specifically by the absence of formal training. I make no claim that my educational background makes me a better photographer than anyone else, but I think you should know I have one.

Most photographers don’t have my background in writing and general communications. This is another asset that sets me apart as a potential partner. To me photography is a tool in my communication toolbox. Not the only tool. Not necessarily the primary tool.

Please take the time the rummage around my portfolio website to get a better idea of my work. You will see that I like to pair photographs with words. I have a natural attraction to interesting stories and places, architectural photography, and because I practice yoga - yoga portraiture. But my range covers a wide variety of subject matter and I would be very interested in meeting you and finding out how we can work together.

In the coming months I plan to expand my offerings further so keep in touch. I’m not going to go into detail now, because I want to make sure I can deliver on everything I offer.

From my perspective, the pandemic is no longer providing an excuse to put things off. I am filling up my 2023 calendar with personal projects and hopefully yours too.
